About the Fender Precision Bass
The Fender Precision Bass was the first commercially successful electric bass guitar, and it fundamentally changed popular music when it appeared in 1951. Before the P Bass, bassists were stuck with upright basses that couldn't be heard over a loud band without a microphone. The split-coil pickup (introduced in 1957) gives the P Bass its distinctive deep, punchy tone that sits perfectly in a mix without a lot of effort. There is always a P Bass available on the used market — they're among the most commonly traded instruments.

Buying Guide
- 1The neck profile changed significantly over the decades. 1950s "baseball bat" necks are very different from modern C-shape profiles. Try before you buy if neck feel matters to you.
- 2MIM (Player series) P Basses are some of the best values in used bass guitars. They use the same body woods and similar electronics to American models.
- 3Check the truss rod nut — some 1970s P Basses used a bullet truss rod that can be tricky to adjust. Not a dealbreaker, just something to know about.
