About the Shure SM57

The Shure SM57 is the most widely used instrument microphone in the world, and it has been since 1965. It's a dynamic mic that sounds good on virtually anything β€” guitar amps, snare drums, brass, vocals in a pinch β€” and it's nearly indestructible. The SM57 is so ubiquitous that you'll find them in every recording studio, every live sound rig, and every used gear marketplace. They're cheap to buy new, even cheaper used, and they essentially never break.

Tone Character

Bright, present midrange with natural high-end rolloff; handles high SPL without distortion

Buying Guide

  • 1Counterfeits exist. Buy from reputable sellers and check that the windscreen unscrews (fakes often have glued-on grilles). The serial number should be on a label inside the handle.
  • 2SM57s don't really "wear out" tonally, so a 20-year-old SM57 sounds the same as a new one. Cosmetic condition is mostly irrelevant.
  • 3At used prices ($50-70), it's barely worth the hassle of buying used vs. new ($99). But if you find one at a garage sale for $20, grab it.
