About the Gibson SG Standard
The Gibson SG Standard is what happened when Gibson redesigned the Les Paul in 1961 to be lighter and more accessible. The thinner, double-cutaway mahogany body gives players much easier access to the upper frets while still delivering that Gibson humbucker warmth. SGs are substantially lighter than Les Pauls, which makes them popular for live players who don't want to deal with shoulder pain after a three-hour set. They're also generally more affordable on the used market.
Solid body, double cutaway, thin mahogany
Bright and aggressive for a Gibson; snappy attack with humbucker warmth
Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Derek Trucks, Frank Zappa
Buying Guide
- 1SGs are neck-heavy — try it with a strap before buying. This is just a design characteristic, not a defect, but some players find it annoying.
- 2Check for headstock cracks and neck joint issues. Like all Gibsons with angled headstocks, SGs can develop problems if dropped.
- 3The SG Standard with small pickguard (2019+) redesign has been well-received and represents good used value.
