Fender vs Squier: Which Should You Buy Used?

This is the most common question in electric guitar: is a Fender worth 2-3x more than a Squier? The honest answer depends on which specific models you are comparing and what matters most to you.

A used Squier Classic Vibe Stratocaster ($200-$350) vs a used Fender Player Stratocaster ($400-$550): the Squier has vintage-correct alnico pickups, a glossy polyester finish, and retro-styled tuning machines. The Fender has alnico V pickups, a satin-finish neck, and a modern 2-point tremolo bridge. Both play well and sound great.

Where Fender pulls ahead: the neck feel on American Fenders is noticeably better — rolled fretboard edges, smoother fret finishing, and more consistent quality control. The electronics are more reliable, the hardware is higher quality, and resale value is significantly better.

Where Squier wins: pure value for money. A $250 Classic Vibe gives you 85% of a $500 Player Fender at half the price. For beginners and gigging musicians who do not baby their instruments, Squier is the smart choice.

Our recommendation: if you are spending under $400, buy a Squier Classic Vibe or Vintage Modified. If you are spending $500+, get a used Fender Player or American. The jump in quality from Squier Affinity to Classic Vibe is bigger than the jump from Classic Vibe to Fender Player.

Buyer's Checklist

  • 1Compare the specific models, not just the brand names
  • 2Check the pickup type — alnico is better than ceramic
  • 3Test the tremolo system — Fender's 2-point is smoother than Squier's 6-point
  • 4Feel the fretboard edges — rolled edges are a significant comfort upgrade
  • 5Consider resale value — Fenders hold value better than Squiers
