Used Fender Stratocaster Buying Guide

The Fender Stratocaster is the most popular electric guitar in the world. With production spanning 70+ years across factories in the USA, Mexico, Japan, and Indonesia, there is a Strat for every budget. Here is what you need to know to find the right one used.

American-made Strats (currently the "American Professional II" line) typically sell for $900-$1,500 used. Mexican-made "Player" series Strats sell for $350-$550 used. Japanese-made Strats from the 1980s-2000s are hidden gems at $400-$800 — many players consider them equal to American models.

The Squier Classic Vibe series deserves special mention — these $200-$350 used guitars punch well above their weight. The Classic Vibe 50s and 60s Strats have alnico pickups, period-correct finishes, and vintage-style hardware that rivals instruments costing twice as much.

Key things vary by era: pre-2012 American Standards used the old 4-bolt neck plate. Post-2017 American Professionals have the "Deep C" neck profile. Mexican-made Player series (2018+) upgraded from the old "Standard" line with alnico pickups and improved bridges.

Serial numbers are your best friend when buying a used Strat. Verify the serial matches the claimed year and origin country. Fender's website has a serial number lookup tool.

Buyer's Checklist

  • 1Verify the serial number and country of origin on Fender's website
  • 2Check if the tremolo springs are intact and the trem arm fits properly
  • 3Look for neck pocket gaps — should fit snugly with no visible gaps
  • 4Test all 5 pickup positions on the selector switch
  • 5Check the neck date stamp (under the neck heel) matches the serial number era
  • 6Inspect the fret edges — Fender's "rolled" fingerboard edges feel smoother
