Best Used Amps for Home Practice

Under $300 — Updated April 2026

The ideal home practice amp sounds great at low volumes, has a headphone output for silent practice, and offers enough tonal variety to keep you inspired. Under $300 used, you have excellent options.

The Boss Katana 50 MKII is the undisputed king of home practice amps. It sounds incredible at any volume, has built-in effects (accessed via the Tone Studio app), and goes loud enough for small jams. Used prices: $150-$200.

For tube amp purists, small wattage amps like the Fender Blues Junior, Vox AC4, and Blackstar HT-1R deliver real tube tone at manageable volumes. The Fender Super Champ X2 combines a tube preamp with a solid-state power section for great tone at low volumes.

Do not overlook headphone amps and desktop units. The Fender Mustang Micro, Boss Waza-Air, and Line 6 Pod Go are all excellent for silent practice with high-quality amp modeling through headphones.

Buyer's Checklist

  • 1Test at your actual practice volume — many amps only sound good when cranked
  • 2Check the headphone output — some amps have poor headphone sound
  • 3Verify the aux input works if you want to play along with backing tracks
  • 4For tube amps, check if it has a power attenuator or low-wattage mode
  • 5Test with headphones to check for excessive hiss or hum at low volumes
