#1
Fender Jazzmaster
Indie essential · Shoegaze, noise rock, indie pop, alternative$550–$1,200 usedBest for: Shoegaze and noise rock — Kevin Shields (MBV), J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr), Sonic Youth
The Jazzmaster is the quintessential indie guitar. Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine used one for the entire "Loveless" album — arguably the defining shoegaze record. J Mascis uses one for Dinosaur Jr's loud, distorted indie rock. The floating tremolo, rhythm circuit, and longer 25.5" scale produce a tonality that no other guitar matches. The rhythm circuit (the odd upper-bout switch and roller controls) produces unusually dark, compressed tones ideal for indie-specific textures.
#2
Fender Jaguar
Post-punk / indie · Post-punk, surf, alternative rock, indie$600–$1,200 usedBest for: Post-punk and surf-influenced indie — Kurt Cobain, Kim Gordon, Johnny Marr
The Jaguar is the Jazzmaster's sibling with a shorter 24" scale and slightly different switching. Kurt Cobain played a Jaguar for "In Utero" and much of Nirvana's later career. Kim Gordon used one with Sonic Youth. The shorter scale makes it feel slightly softer under the fingers and more aggressive in the upper register. Its association with alternative and grunge-adjacent indie rock is deep.
#3
Squier Classic Vibe Jazzmaster
Budget indie essential · Budget shoegaze, indie rock, alt on a tight budget$300–$450 usedBest for: Jazzmaster tone without the $600+ price
The Squier Classic Vibe Jazzmaster is the budget path to the offset body indie sound. It captures the Jazzmaster's essential character — the floating tremolo, the rhythm/lead circuit switching, the single-coil brightness — at a price point accessible to most players. Used examples at $300–$450 are consistently recommended as the best budget indie guitar, full stop.
#4
Rickenbacker 330 / 360
Jangle pop · Post-punk, jangle pop, British Invasion-adjacent indie$800–$1,400 usedBest for: Jangle pop and post-punk — R.E.M., The Smiths, Tom Verlaine (Television)
The Rickenbacker defined jangle pop. R.E.M.'s Peter Buck played one for the entire early career; Johnny Marr used Rickenbacker 12-strings for The Smiths' defining sound. The dual-output output jack, "Rick-O-Sound" stereo configuration, and toaster pickups produce a chiming, ringing tone that no other guitar replicates. The neck profile is uniquely narrow and slightly uncomfortable at first, but players who bond with Rickenbackers rarely switch.
#5
Fender Mustang
Short-scale indie · Grunge-adjacent indie, lo-fi rock, garage rock$450–$900 usedBest for: Short-scale indie and lo-fi — Kurt Cobain (early Nirvana), Liz Phair
The Mustang is a 24" scale student guitar that became an indie and alternative rock icon through Kurt Cobain, who played one extensively during Nirvana's early years and on the "MTV Unplugged" performance. The short scale, two single-coil pickups with individual on/off switches, and dynamic tremolo produce a distinctive, slightly rough, immediate response. It suits lo-fi recording aesthetics.
#6
Gibson ES-335
Semi-hollow premium · Alternative, indie rock, indie pop$1,800–$3,500 usedBest for: Warm, complex indie rock tone — Noel Gallagher, Dave Grohl, Wilco
The ES-335 has found a home in indie rock for its warmth and complexity. Noel Gallagher played an ES-355 (the ES-335's twin) throughout Oasis. Dave Grohl has used semi-hollow Gibsons with Foo Fighters. The semi-hollow body construction produces a more layered, resonant tone than solid-body alternatives — well-suited to indie rock contexts where the band plays cleanly with light overdrive. The feedback characteristics at stage volumes are musical rather than unpleasant.
#7
Epiphone Dot
Budget semi-hollow · Budget indie, alternative, light-overdrive rock$200–$350 usedBest for: Budget semi-hollow for indie rock and warm overdrive tone
The Epiphone Dot is the ES-335's affordable cousin at $200–$350 used. The semi-hollow construction produces a genuinely different character from solid-body guitars — warmer, more resonant, with a natural bloom to notes. For indie rock players who want the semi-hollow sound without the $2,000+ Gibson price, the Dot delivers the essential character. A popular pickup upgrade platform — Seymour Duncan 59s or Seth Lovers make it sound considerably closer to a Gibson.
#8
Fender Stratocaster
Versatile indie · Indie pop, alternative, clean indie rock$450–$1,200 usedBest for: Clean, bright indie pop and alternative — Radiohead (early), Pavement, Built to Spill
The Stratocaster appears in indie rock wherever the sound leans cleaner and brighter. Radiohead used Telecasters and Stratocasters extensively on "The Bends" and early albums. Pavement's Stephen Malkmus plays Stratocasters. The five-way switching produces the jangle and sparkle indie pop needs. For players who want versatility that covers indie and other styles, the Strat's range makes it sensible even in an offset-heavy genre.
