Fingerstyle guitar demands different qualities than strumming. You want a balanced tone where bass, mids, and treble are equally clear, a responsive top that reacts to subtle touch, and a comfortable body shape that does not fight your right hand position.
Concert and OM (Orchestra Model) body shapes are ideal for fingerpicking. They are smaller than dreadnoughts, which means they sit more comfortably and produce a more balanced tone. Martin OM-28, Taylor 314ce, and Yamaha LL16 are all excellent fingerstyle guitars.
Parlor guitars are having a renaissance. Their small bodies produce a focused, intimate sound that records beautifully. The Fender Paramount Parlor, Recording King RPH-05, and Martin 0-18 are all available used at great prices.
String spacing matters for fingerpicking — wider spacing gives your fingers more room. Most fingerstyle players prefer 2-5/16" spacing at the saddle. Check the specs before buying.
