Used guitar listings use condition terminology that sounds clear but means different things across sellers, platforms, and even decades of collecting. A "mint" guitar from a casual seller and a "mint" guitar from a professional dealer are often very different instruments.
Mint / Near Mint: The instrument looks and plays as if it just left the factory. No visible wear, no scratches, original hardware, typically unplayed or played only briefly in a controlled environment. These are rare for instruments more than a few years old. Sellers who describe instruments as "mint" when they show any play wear are using the term loosely — it's a yellow flag.
Excellent: The gold standard for serious buyers. Minor cosmetic wear only — perhaps a few small scratches in the finish or light pick marks near the soundhole — but nothing that affects playability or tone. Electronics fully functional. Frets show minimal wear. This is what most buyers should target.
Very Good: Visible wear consistent with regular use, but the instrument is fully playable without additional work. May include belt buckle rash, strap button wear, pick scratches on the top, or some fret wear. Price should reflect the condition. Many "Very Good" instruments play and sound as good as Excellent examples.
Good: More significant cosmetic issues, possibly some playability concerns (setup needed, some fret wear, minor electronics issues). Price should be substantially lower. Good instruments can be excellent players after professional setup and minor work.
Fair / Player Grade: Significant wear or damage that the seller is disclosing. Typically priced low enough to account for repair costs. Worth buying only if you're comfortable with setups, know a good tech, or are buying specifically for parts.
The key insight: condition affects price more than tone. A Very Good Fender American Professional Stratocaster sounds identical to an Excellent one. The $100-$200 difference is purely cosmetic. Buy the lower condition if you intend to gig with it — and buy the higher condition if you intend to resell.
