Reverb is a legitimate marketplace used by millions of buyers and sellers, owned by Etsy since 2019. For the vast majority of transactions, it is safe. But like any marketplace, understanding how its protections work — and where they don't — helps you buy confidently.
Reverb Buyer Protection: Reverb offers a buyer protection program that covers items that are significantly not as described, items that never arrive, and items that arrive damaged. The protection window is typically 7 days after confirmed delivery. To initiate a claim: contact the seller first, document the issue with photos, then open a case through Reverb's Resolution Center if the seller doesn't resolve it within 48 hours.
Payment methods matter: Reverb buyer protection applies when you pay through Reverb's checkout (credit card, PayPal via Reverb, Affirm). If a seller asks you to pay via bank transfer, Zelle, Venmo as "friends and family," or cryptocurrency — decline immediately and report the listing. These payment requests bypass all protections and are a near-universal scam signal.
How to spot Reverb scams: Too-good-to-be-true prices on desirable instruments (a 2019 Gibson Les Paul Standard at $400), sellers with zero feedback asking to communicate off-platform, listings with stock photos rather than actual photos of the instrument, and sellers who become unreachable after payment. The most common scam pattern: fake listing, payment via unprotected method, seller disappears.
For expensive purchases ($1,500+): consider requesting a local pickup, using an escrow service, or buying from a Reverb-verified dealer (the blue "Preferred Seller" badge indicates higher sales volume and customer ratings). Many professional dealers on Reverb offer trial periods or returns for high-value instruments.
The honest assessment: Reverb is safe for the overwhelming majority of transactions with established sellers. The risk is concentrated in: new sellers with no feedback, unusually low prices, and requests to pay outside the platform. Avoid these patterns and you'll have a standard marketplace experience.
