About PRS

Paul Reed Smith Guitars was founded in 1985 in Stevensville, Maryland. PRS occupies a unique position in the guitar market — producing instruments that blend Gibson-style tone with Fender-style playability in a distinctive design language. The Custom 24 and McCarty 594 are among the most sought-after used guitars in their price range. PRS offers three main tiers: the American-made Core line, the US-made S2 line at mid-price, and the Korean-made SE line at entry/intermediate price points. All tiers hold their value reasonably well, with Core models appreciating over time.

Buying Used PRS

  • 1PRS Core (American), S2 (American, budget), and SE (Korean) are distinct product lines — prices vary significantly. Check the headstock decal for the model tier.
  • 2PRS birds inlays are a Core line feature — SE models use moon or dot inlays. If birds are present on a used SE listing, inspect closely.
  • 3The Silver Sky (John Mayer collaboration) uses Fender-style spec including 7.25" radius and vintage-style single-coils — quite different from typical PRS.
